Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Taholah, Washington. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is expert in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body may be used. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judiciary bodies, and probationers frequently use hair follicle tests. The main advantage includes a lengthy detection period, usually up to 90 days, with sample collection being closely observed, making it hard to tamper with accuracy. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can deliver nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen weight. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that are provisionally positive require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is provisionally positive at the Screening phase, more hair is sourced from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All provisional positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection interval.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It provides a trend of drug usage over a time span, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often styled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
