Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Thorp, Washington. Our expertise lies in hair testing for drug or alcohol analysis, with facilities across the nation ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for tests, which can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown in favor for substance detection. Today, many employers, courts, and substance abuse authorities prefer it over conventional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services find hair tests advantageous. With a detection window of up to 90 days, it's difficult to falsify compared to urine tests, although urine remains effective for recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers. When gathered near to the scalp, hair presents up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's balance. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's system. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input that isn't covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any screening positives is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a more limited detection time.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It provides a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
