Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

This step includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Any samples that are presumed positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.
When a sample is presumed positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.
Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
