Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Tulalip, Washington. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities nationwide that can administer a hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been employed for substance testing. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Entities with strict drug-use policies, like zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officials, often choose hair follicle tests. This method's key benefit is its extended detection window, typically reaching 90 days, executed in a monitored collection setting, and is highly resistant to tampering. However, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of substances through biomarkers inside the strands as they develop. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month range detection for substances. Collection is straightforward, modification is challenging, and shipping is trouble-free.

A 1.5-inch clip of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, which is ideal for testing. For EtG, extra screenings, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg is optimal. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In case scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be taken. Head hair pertains to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

Four key steps in a laboratory’s drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with processing the sample within the lab's system, ensuring it's properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for addictive substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in many samples, a positive result must be verified for legal submission. Presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a Screening stage suggests positive results, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction, where substances are withdrawn from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), affirming its complexity as a testing method.

Confirmation of preliminary positive results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation observes both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug assessments:

  • Extended detectability: Hair drug evaluation can uncover substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine evaluations with shorter ranges.
  • Hard to manipulate: Efforts to deceive hair drug assessments are laborious, ensuring greater result precision.
  • Historical insight: It reveals patterns of substance use over time, not merely recent incidents.

Drawbacks:

  • Limits in detecting immediate use: Drugs become apparent in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as individual hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
