Located in Turner Corner, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Our centers across the Nation are well-equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol, including ETG, and offer various other specialized options tailored to your needs.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair testing over urine tests due to its extended detection capabilities. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers favor this method for its reliability. However, when identifying recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant approach for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they develop. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and drugs for a duration of up to three months or so. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in width) near the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both initial testing and verification. For additional tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, an equivalent sample of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes any other hair types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in a laboratory involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the introductory processing of a sample within a laboratory framework. This stage ensures that the sample is appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any necessary data input not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Screening presents a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, although a positive result requires verification to be valid in legal settings. Samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo further validation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a much shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Insights into drug history: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes between 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite occasionally being called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the strand of hair, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Turner Corner, WA, surpass urine testing by providing longer detection periods and superior reliability. While urine tests are standard, they fall short in longevity, as hair tests detect substance use up to 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
