Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Upper Skagit, Washington. With expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing, we operate centers across all cities nationwide. For a reliable hair test, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test method has become more popular. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are now opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. This method appeals to entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Its main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation, and is nearly foolproof. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine remains the best test.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol intake. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reflect consumption over roughly a three-month span for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a matching quantity of body hair is an acceptable substitute. "Head hair" explicitly refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" signifies all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This process includes confirming the sample's secure sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug traces. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that yield presumptively positive results during Screening require additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional amounts of hair from the original sample are utilized for Extraction. This procedure extracts drugs at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), reflecting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine testing which offers a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug test results is notably difficult, enhancing their accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Provides an overview of drug intake trends over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though occasionally termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis itself is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
