Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Valley, Washington. When you require a drug or alcohol exam involving hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert, facilitating these tests across various cities nationwide. A minimum hair length between 1.5 to 2 inches is generally necessary, and both head and body hair can often be used. Tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and include personalized testing options.

In recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing as a preferred method has increased. Many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer it over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probation programs often rely on hair drug tests. These tests offer the advantage of monitoring drug use for up to 90 days, collected under observation and are almost impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for recent usage detection within five days, urine testing remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has come to be regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and substances by holding onto biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 90-day detection window for alcohol as well as drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately matching the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When speaking of head hair, we specify scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the specimen was sealed and dispatched appropriately, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for illegal drugs. Screening is a cost-effective approach to rule out substance usage in most specimens; however, a positive result in Screening must be corroborated for court acceptance. Any specimens tentatively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a specimen be tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration level than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screen results is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive results undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in tampering: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over a sustained period, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
