Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Wabash, Washington. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, offering testing facilities across all cities Nationwide that are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair analyses can assess drug and alcohol/ETG presence or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug assessments. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer a hair drug test over a traditional urine test. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation frequently use hair follicle testing. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extensive detection period for drug use, often reaching up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making them nearly immune to tampering. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and can be easily shipped.

An ideal sample involves cutting a 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yielding 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to collect 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, the same amount of body hair may be taken. When we mention head hair, it solely refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage of integrating a sample into the lab’s system. It involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Presumptively positive samples during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is collected from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation governs a thorough review of the entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter time frame.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, leading to more accurate results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
