Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Wauna, Washington. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we offer numerous centers nationwide. Hair samples must typically measure between 1.5 and 2 inches from the head or body. We analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for substance detection. Numerous employers, legal bodies, and addiction professionals prefer it over standard urine tests. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probationers by offering an extended detection window of up to 90 days with minimal risk of evasion. However, urine tests remain more precise for very recent drug use, specifically within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strands. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands of hair (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. References to head hair indicate scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial integration into the lab's system. This consists of checking that the sample was securely sealed and correctly dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage across most samples, a positive indication requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a second confirmation.

If during Screening a sample is considered presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is quite difficult, which enhances the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use across a duration, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It typically requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth may impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
