With its comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing caters to the West Pasco, Washington region. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, they boast nationwide centers capable of administering hair samples. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from the head or body is required. Their tests assess substances like drugs, ETG alcohol, and offer tailored testing solutions.

The drive towards hair follicle tests for drug screening has grown in popularity among employers, courts, and abuse specialists, often in favor of traditional urine tests. Chosen by zero-tolerance workplaces and the judiciary, these tests detect drug use for up to 90 days and are nearly foolproof. Conversely, urine tests remain the preferred choice for precise detection of recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a highly effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage. When sampled from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, it is somewhat resistant to tampering, and is easily transportable.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches long and consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is considered optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, it is suggested to use 150mg. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing this sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. This entails verifying the integrity of the sample seal and its proper shipment, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and completing any extra data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary, cost-effective evaluation for the presence of drugs. Though most samples can be cleared using Screening, a confirmed result is required for legal admissibility. Samples that test positively during Screening require further confirmation.

In cases of positive results at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction process. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening notably complex.

To affirm a positive screening finding, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed. All samples indicating positivity are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use for a span of up to 90 days, which is longer than the window for urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, contributing to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs typically need 5-7 days post-use to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: Commonly termed “hair follicle tests,” these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
