Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in Westport, Washington. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with facilities nationwide capable of such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body can be used. Hair assessments can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have often included hair follicle drug tests. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer a hair test over the usual urine test. Employers with strict drug policies, court systems, and probationary individuals utilize hair tests. The chief advantage is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision and not easily tampered with. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair shaft fibers. When collected from the scalp, hair can reveal use patterns spanning approximately up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for both initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" refers to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped accurately, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening involves a preliminary and swift evaluation for drugs. Screening is an economical method to confirm the absence of drug use in most samples. However, if a positive screen occurs, it requires further verification for legal admissibility. Samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo an additional confirmation stage.

For presumptively positive samples after Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from the screening process is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are appropriately washed before confirmation. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is extremely difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It provides insight into the pattern of drug use over time, unlike just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Individual differences such as hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
