At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in White Salmon, Washington. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our centers are available in all cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is needed. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Over the years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle examinations. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are especially utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A major advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect prolonged drug use, up to 90 days, collected under observation and almost impossible to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-lasting record of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers in the strands' fibers as they grow. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for roughly up to a quarter of a year. Hair collection is easy, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for both screening and verification. For tests like EtG, enhancements, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test is comprised of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating the sample into the lab's system initially. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Though cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to stand in court. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

A presumptively positive sample in the Screening stage means extracting more hair from the original batch for Extraction. Here, drug concentrations are sourced from hair at a much lower density than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to implement.

Confirmation of any positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Able to detect drug use over a 90-day span, hair drug tests exceed the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Its difficulty to falsify heightens the reliability of a hair drug test.
  • Offers usage history: It traces a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Indifference to recent use: Drugs don't show in hair for about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing kinds.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates may alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates only the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In White Salmon, WA, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests due to their extended detection capabilities. Hair testing offers a broader timeline, effectively identifying drug use over several months, enhancing accuracy and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
