Complete hair follicle drug testing is provided by Accredited Drug Testing in Wilderness Rim, Washington. If you're seeking hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our centers, available in cities nationwide, excel in hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. This method allows analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent years as an alternative to conventional urine tests. Many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests. Hair follicle tests suit organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies due to their longer detection windows—up to 90 days—and are performed under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent usage within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can show up to a three-month span for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and tests over 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the hair sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of entering a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional information entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial expedient assessment for drugs. While Screening proves to be an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be considered in legal proceedings. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening undergo further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction preparation. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly smaller concentrations compared to alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It divulges a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be discernible in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wilderness Rim, WA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by providing superior detection accuracy and dependability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests offer a longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, ensuring a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance history. This method is especially beneficial for employers, courts, and probation programs seeking credible and consistent results.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Wilderness Rim, WA, captures a backtrack of substance usage for as long as 90 days. This broader detection period provides employers with a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's substance use over three months, making it an invaluable tool in making informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Wilderness Rim, WA, is robust against tampering, significantly decreasing the chance of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
