Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Woodland, Washington. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for most cases. We offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained preference over traditional methods in recent years. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now demand hair tests instead of conventional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services due to their extended 90-day detection window, reliable collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still offer accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. It offers a prolonged record of substance utilization by encapsulating biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can disclose drug and alcohol usage within a roughly 3-month traceability period. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, considered the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement of the specimen. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be acquired. In discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result fundamentally involves four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data recording not addressed by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for substance abuse. It offers an affordable means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, however, a positive screening must be validated in order to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly reduced concentrations as compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis one of the most intricate methodologies to undertake.

Any positive results from screening require Verification through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples confirmed presumptively positive undergo cleansing prior to further verification. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug analyses can track substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Cheating deterrence: The ability to manipulate results in a hair drug analysis is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage record: It can delineate a substance use pattern over time, beyond just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: There is an approximately 5-7 day period before drugs become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug analyses incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair development can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair strands.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle situated under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
