Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Woodway, Washington. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol screening you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests accommodate drug, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a common method for drug screening. Many companies, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine analysis. Hair tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. These tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, collected in a supervised manner, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now seen as a formidable method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fiber of the growing strand. When extracted near the scalp, hair may yield up to nearly a 3-month insight into drug and alcohol use. It is straightforward to procure, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. In our context, head hair denotes only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages involved in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of initially registering a sample into the laboratory’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary, rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical way to clear most samples of drug use, any positive results must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples that show preliminary positive results in Screening require an additional confirmation phase.

In instances where a Screening suggests a potential positive outcome, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from the hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed for the Confirmation of any positive Screening result. All samples with presumed positive results are cleansed prior to Confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standard of ISO/IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Offers usage history: It can display a timeline of drug use, unlike tests indicating only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days before they are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyses the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing stands out in Woodway, WA, for its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a longer timeframe of substance history, offering a broader understanding of drug habits and ensuring a foolproof evaluation for employers.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Woodway, WA, allows for drug monitoring up to 90 days. This broad timeframe, unavailable in urine testing, offers employers detailed insights into an individual's drug history. It ensures that only candidates who maintain a substance-free lifestyle are selected.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Woodway, WA, are tamper-resistant, ensuring an unadulterated sample. These tests eradicate the potential for sample manipulation, providing employers with dependable results. The process is meticulously observed, virtually eliminating the chance for deceit or alteration, unlike other drug testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
