Nationwide Hair Follicle Drug Testing
Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Yacolt, Washington. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol testing, with several testing centers across all cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Usually, a crown length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed, though other body hair can be tested if required. Assessing hair can reveal drug or alcohol/ETG usage, along with customized testing solutions.

Increasing Preference for Hair Follicle Tests
Hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace in recent times. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor it over standard urine testing. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary programs. The extended detection span of up to 90 days and the observation during collection make hair follicle tests nearly tamper-proof, although urine tests still offer the most precision for detecting recent usage up to five days ago.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and substance use, by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands, resembling a #2 pencil’s thickness, near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, supplemental analyses, and/or screens surpassing 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen is given. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair is viable for collection. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial entry into the laboratory's framework. This process ensures the sample is correctly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase provides an initial assessment for the presence of drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly means to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive results must undergo confirmation to be viable in court. Samples with presumptively positive screenings require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive results from the Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Minimal risk of tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: These tests provide an overview of drug use over time, not merely current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs may take 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expensive: Generally, hair drug analyses incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
