Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive testing using hair follicles for drugs and alcohol in Accoville, West Virginia. Our expertise in hair testing spans across all cities Nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is typically needed. This method reliably detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as an alternative to the traditional urine tests. Employers, courts, and professionals specializing in Substance Abuse are increasingly opting for this method. Employers with zero-tolerance policies particularly favor it for its extended detection period of up to 90 days and observed collection process, which makes it difficult to falsify. Yet, for very recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers an extended history of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use history with a detection span of up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

Collecting a sample of around 1.5 inches in length with roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests that surpass 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This stage includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for it to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before necessary confirmations. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can detect drug intake up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical usage data: It can display a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days before drugs are identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often described as "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Accoville, WV, offers several benefits over urine tests. The primary benefit is its superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which detect drug use over a short period, hair tests provide a longer window, up to 90 days.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing is less susceptible to tampering. For employers focusing on workplace safety, this reliability makes hair testing the preferred choice. It ensures compliance and integrity in testing protocols.

Extended Detection Window

One of the main advantages of hair follicle testing in Accoville, WV, is its extended detection window. It traces substance use for up to 90 days, offering a thorough perspective on an individual's substance history.

Employers benefit from this extended window by getting a long-term view of potential employees' habits, which assists in making informed hiring decisions and maintaining workplace safety standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test in Accoville, WV, is a tamper-resistant method ensuring reliable results. The likelihood of sample adulteration is significantly minimized, providing clarity in drug testing results.

When compared to traditional methods, the hair follicle test stands out. Its robust collection and testing process make it a trusted choice for many seeking unquestionable accuracy in drug testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
