Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Belington, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing, with centers accessible nationwide. To qualify, you need at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or elsewhere. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prominent. An array of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug screenings are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. This method, which involves a monitored collection, is tough to tamper with, but for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug consumption by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair samples provide a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drug use. The process of obtaining hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be missing, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the first phase of incorporating a sample into the laboratory’s inventory. This process verifies that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for dismissing drug use in most samples, positive screens require confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive from the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive results from screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The full procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenges in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug usage, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs show up in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
