Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screening in Bemis, West Virginia. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities nationwide ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace as a method for screening substances. Many employers, legal systems, and drug abuse specialists prefer hair testing over urine tests. Hair follicle screenings are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies and are utilized in court systems and probation services. The significant advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window of about 90 days, with results obtained via supervised sample collection, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the tresses. When obtained near the scalp, hair can illustrate a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of roughly 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (nearly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a sample quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest the specimen be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair cannot be obtained, a proportional amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning addresses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's tracking system. This step includes verifying the sample was sealed and transported correctly, producing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not supported by an electronic custody management system.

Screening provides an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screening must be validated for legal proceedings. Any samples with presumption-positive results during Screening necessitate secondary validation.

If a positive presumption arises during Screening, additional hair samples are extracted from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations lower than found in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluids), distinguishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmations of any presumption-positive results proceed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumption-positive specimen is cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair endorsement along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to compromise: Altering results for a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring higher reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: This testing method illustrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternate methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
