Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for drug use in Bergoo, WV. If you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert, with locations nationwide that provide hair testing services. Adequate hair length, about 1.5 to 2 inches, is essential for testing, whether taken from the head or body. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle assessments have become a more common element of drug screening. Nowadays, many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. Organizations that enforce strict drug policies, such as employers, legal entities, and probation officers, rely on hair tests. The superior detection span of up to 90 days with direct observation makes it almost foolproof, although for identifying very recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drug use. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to gather 150mg of hair. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair should be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves the following four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage in integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry that might not be present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial, rapid detection of potential drug abuse. Although a cost-efficient method to eliminate non-drug users in many samples, positive screening results require confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation tests.

For a sample testing positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the stored specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to carry out.

Positive results in screening are subsequently verified using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples initially flagged as positive are washed before undergoing confirmation where necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is tracked under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical insight: Offers a comprehensive view of drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Hair testing requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in the hair.
  • Expense: This testing method often costs more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
