Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Blacksville, West Virginia. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body should suffice. Our hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug detection. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests rather than urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation due to its extended detection period, effectively tracking substance use for up to 90 days through an observed process that is hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, the likelihood of tampering is low, and it is easy to transport.

A strand segment of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), cut closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and any test beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of the sample into the lab's system. This phase verifies proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic data custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positive samples in Screening do need an additional confirmation step.

If Screening indicates a sample is presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a more diluted concentration compared to other methodologies such as urine or oral fluid, hence hair drug testing remains the most complex method.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily identified as positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to evaluation under the guidelines of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more restricted detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat on, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It indicates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than simply the most recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: It takes around 5-7 days before substances become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand itself and not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Blacksville, WV is evident when comparing accuracy and reliability. Hair tests display superior detection capabilities over urine tests by providing a longer assessment window. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
