Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bolair, West Virginia. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and we operate testing centers in every city across the nation that can conduct hair tests. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing purposes. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test method has been more widely adopted for drug screenings. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection timeframe for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, and highly resistant to tampering. However, urine tests are preferred for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a crucial method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of these substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. Collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. The sample is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial evaluation for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage concerns in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Presumptively positive Screenings necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
