Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Brighton, West Virginia. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol tests means you can access our services across the nation, with centers in every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for substance detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for this over urine tests. Favorable for zero-tolerance policies, probation, and legal assessments, this test provides a longer detection window of up to 90 days, is observed during collection, and is nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting very recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and other drugs of up to about 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially inputting a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is a highly challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical patterns: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing forms.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. In Brighton, WV, hair tests detect drug use with superior accuracy and reliability. The advanced detection method provides a broader timeframe for analysis, ensuring a more comprehensive view of usage patterns.

Compared to urine tests, which are often limited in detection windows, hair follicle testing reveals extended periods of substance use. Employers favor this due to its precise and reliable outcomes, fostering a trustworthy workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

For those in Brighton, WV, hair follicle testing extends the detection period for drug use to up to 90 days. This extensive window is particularly beneficial for employers and agencies seeking a thorough assessment of an individual's substance history.

With hair tests covering nearly a three-month period, employers gain insightful information into an applicant or employee's past drug use. The longer detection range aids in ensuring compliance with company policies and highlights potential risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
