Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Camp Creek, West Virginia. Whether in need of evaluating for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair sampling, and with locations in every city across the nation, we can perform such tests easily. Typically, hair length should be between 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body. Analyses may include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specified hair testing types.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug examinations has risen. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair analysis over regular urine testing. Hair follicle inspections are employed by drug-free workplace enforcers, judiciary systems, and parole programs. Its chief advantage is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, with sample collection under supervision, making tampering nearly inconceivable. However, within the most recent five-day usage detection, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal specimen for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent mass of body hair can be used. In discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug consumption on most samples, a positive result needs verification to be legally acceptable. Any samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens receive pre-confirmation washing as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are exceedingly hard to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
