Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Carolina, West Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide for these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices. Hair analyses can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted to hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over urine tests. These are vital for workplaces with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation cases. A key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, within an observed process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term log of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. Obtaining hair samples near the scalp can offer a detection span of up to three months for substances. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample is sealed and transported securely, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening consists of a preliminary examination for substance misuse. While screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in many samples, positive findings require confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with tentative positive findings are cleansed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to tamper: Tampering with a hair drug test is quite challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: Provides insights into drug usage trends over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
