Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screening in Carpendale, West Virginia. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations with centers available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Hair examinations can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various options.

Lately, drug testing strategies are increasingly incorporating hair follicle evaluations. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair testing over standard urine evaluations. Hair follicle tests appeal to workplaces with strict drug policies, court systems, and probation requirements, providing the advantage of a prolonged detection timeframe of up to 90 days via supervised collection, minimizing chances of tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the benchmark for identifying recent drug usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair diagnostics have emerged as an effective resource for uncovering substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding evidence in the strands of the developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra documentation not provided by an electronic custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude substance consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be viable in legal proceedings. Any samples that test as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

Should a sample test as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a much lesser concentration than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair substance screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair substance screening:

  • Extended detection range: Hair substance screenings can identify substance consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine screenings which have a limited detection range.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is quite tough to manipulate a hair substance screening, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can exhibit a pattern of substance consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair substance screenings are generally pricier than other substance screening techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Factors such as hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can influence the presence of substance metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently referenced as "hair follicle screenings", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Carpendale, WV Hair follicle tests offer a remarkable advantage in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair assessments provide a more thorough overview of an individual's substance history over an extended duration, ensuring a higher confidence level in results and an inability to manipulate outcomes to pass the test dishonestly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
