In Cassville, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. For those needing tests for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by nationwide centers including all major cities. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices for sampling. Our hair tests cater to drug detection, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized options.

Hair follicle testing has become a popular method for drug screening in recent times. A growing number of employers, judicial authorities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of the conventional urine tests. This method is particularly favored by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and probation cases due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days. The process is carefully monitored, making it nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance use related to drugs and alcohol. The strands of hair encapsulate a lengthy record of chemicals by capturing identifiers within the threads of the developing hair shaft. Hair, when cut near the scalp, can reveal evidence of alcohol and other substances over a span of roughly three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplement tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all additional types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning requires initial handling of a specimen by a lab’s infrastructure. This step ensures the sample was accurately sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any lacking data entry aside from what an electronic chain of custody provides.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use in the majority of cases, any positive findings must undergo confirmation for legal acceptability. All specimens shown positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

In the case of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this juncture, substances are isolated from hair at ratios significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive assessments from Screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as warranted before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the comprehensive lab procedures are inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can reveal drug intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine testing, which detects drugs within a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Sequential usage record: It provides a history of substance use spanning time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: About 5-7 days are necessary for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than other methods for drug evaluation.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can sway drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
