Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Charlton Heights, WV. Our centers across the country can carry out tests for drugs or alcohol using a hair sample. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular in drug testing methods. Many organizations and legal institutions now prefer hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies. The key advantage is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted with direct observation, reducing chances of tampering. For identifying recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing into a laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally permissible. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening demand an additional confirmation.

If a sample is positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations far lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can find drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is very tough to falsify a hair drug test, making the results more reliable.
  • Deliver historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't spot recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers advantages over urine testing in Charlton Heights, WV, with its superior accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are commonly used, hair tests provide a more comprehensive assessment, identifying drug use over a longer period, thus ensuring better detection of habitual usage.

The extended detection window of hair tests often shows a history of substance use that urine tests might miss. This makes hair follicle tests the better choice for employers who require a detailed understanding of an employee's or applicant's past drug use, ensuring better hiring decisions.

Extended Detection Window

In Charlton Heights, WV, the hair follicle testing method stands out for its extended detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days. This provides employers a more comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history, going well beyond the limitations of traditional methods.

This long detection period is invaluable for making informed decisions about current or prospective employees. It ensures that short-term abstinence doesn’t obscure an individual’s longer-term behavior, protecting workplace safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
