Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Craigsville, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing and operates testing centers across all cities nationally, capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often demand hair drug tests instead of the usual urine analysis. Hair follicle tests serve employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected through a supervised process, making them nearly impossible to alter. However, for detecting substance use in the previous 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair provides an extended-term summary of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for drug and alcohol presence. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers to scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary input of a sample into a laboratory system. This includes verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that are presumably positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumably positive in the Screening phase, more hair is gathered from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally carry a higher price than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Craigsville, WV
Hair follicle tests offer substantial advantages over traditional urine tests, particularly in Craigsville. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests excel with their ability to reveal longer-term patterns of use, providing a more thorough substance history. This makes hair tests far superior in accuracy and reliability.

Employers benefit from this increased detection range, ensuring compliance with no-tolerance policies. Hair testing also safeguards against common urine test limitations, such as short detection periods and potential alteration, thereby ensuring a trustworthy assessment of an employee's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Craigsville, WV
Hair follicle testing provides a broader detection window, crucial for Craigsville employers seeking comprehensive evaluations. While other methods may detect drug use over days, hair testing reveals substance history up to 90 days, offering deeper insights into an individual’s consumption behaviors.

This extended period provides employers with a more complete picture, aiding in informed decision-making. Hair testing ensures that substance abuse issues are not overlooked, maintaining high standards for workplace safety and performance over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
