Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Cucumber, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is vast, with facilities available in every city across the nation for convenient testing. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used. Hair testing is adaptable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair analysis alternatives.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug assessment protocols. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine analysis. This method is preferred by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, and the observed collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for identifying drug use within the five-day window.

What it is, How it works

The examination of hair has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of up to about three months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional elements, or tests above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. While referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary procedures involved in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplementary data input not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for judicial acceptance. Samples viewed as potentially positive in Screening call for additional verification.

Samples that are considered potentially positive during Screening undergo further preparation for Extraction, where more hair is taken from the initial sample. During this phase, the concentration of drugs is extracted at a much lower level than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples predicted as positive are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is challenging, making them more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can trace a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cucumber, WV, the advantages of hair analysis are clear. Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability, giving employers a broader timeframe to ascertain drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
