Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Davy, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing. We maintain testing centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard practice. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers frequently opt for these tests. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making deception nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extensive historical record of substances like alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, it’s relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample processing into the lab’s system. This stage checks if the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is about promptly identifying any drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicated as positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging approach to conduct.

Confirming any positive screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing in Davy, WV, hair follicle tests offer distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. A primary benefit of hair testing is its superior detection period, which can trace drug activity for up to 90 days. This makes it a more accurate gauge of long-term substance use, unlike urine tests that are limited to a shorter window.

Moreover, the reliability of hair testing means that it's harder to tamper with, providing more honest results. While urine tests have been the standard, the shift to hair follicle testing means greater reassurance for employers due to minimal risk of cheating, fostering trust in their drug monitoring processes.

Extended Detection Window

A standout feature of hair follicle testing in Davy, WV, is its ability to detect drug use over an extensive period. By examining hair samples, the test unveils a comprehensive three-month history of substance use. This extended timeframe is invaluable for employers assessing applicants or employees' long-term behavior and adherence to drug-free policies.

The capability to uncover habitual drug use is a critical factor, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions based on an individual's substance history. This thorough detection is unmatched by other testing methods, giving an edge to those who prioritize workplace safety and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Davy, WV, is notably tamper-resistant, reducing the chance of sample adulteration. Unlike other testing methods that may be vulnerable to interference, hair tests provide definitive results that are trusted by many institutions. This reliability ensures clarity and accuracy in assessing an individual's substance use history.

Using hair testing minimizes the risk of false results and manipulation, as it's challenging to alter the composition of hair. Therefore, for critical decisions or compliance, hair tests offer unmatched integrity, guaranteeing outcomes that reflect true substance consumption patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
