Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Delray, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our centers are located nationwide to cater to this requirement. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing strategies have increasingly adopted the hair follicle approach. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair analyses over traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationaries. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection duration, up to 90 days, with witnessed sample collection, making it virtually foolproof. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository of long-term alcohol and other drug histories by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the continually developing hair strand. If gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair — the optimal quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportional amount of body hair may be taken. Concerning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves logging a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug consumption in most samples, although a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory processing from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they can be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Delray, WV, hair follicle testing holds a distinct edge over urine testing.

  • Enhanced detection accuracy
  • Greater reliability
  • Reduces false results
Hair tests cut through deceptive practices, providing a more authentic reading than urine tests, which can be altered or obscured by recent use of masking agents.

Beyond accuracy, hair testing also offers extended detection, providing a more accurate picture of substance use history. When weighing options, hair tests stand as a superior choice for thorough evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

In Delray, WV, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is invaluable. This method captures a record of drug use up to 90 days prior, allowing for a broader view of an individual's substance history. This duration far surpasses that of urine tests, offering employers a more comprehensive assessment.

Employers find this advantageous as it provides a longer timeline to assess past drug use, ensuring they have the most accurate and complete information about potential candidates or employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Delray, WV is rooted in its tamper-resistant nature. By significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration, it offers reliable outcomes that cannot be easily manipulated or contested. This contrasts sharply with urine tests, where sample tampering is a common issue.

This ensures the unquestionable validity of results provided to employers and individuals alike, minimizing doubts and reinforcing confidence in testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
