In Dixie, WV, Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive service for hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're seeking alcohol or drug tests, we are experts in hair analysis, with nationwide centers available for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body for accurate testing. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and additional tailored hair test options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists now favor this over urine tests. Hair follicle testing is adopted by organizations with strict drug policies and by judicial institutions. Its key advantage is the extended detection window, often reaching 90 days, under a monitored collection, ensuring minimal chance for deception. Yet, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective instrument in identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. With hair collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) located closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for initial testing and validation. For EtG, extended tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, only scalp hair is included. Body hair encompasses other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four key phases in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s database. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any essential data entry not rendered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary fast check for substances. While it’s a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Any samples found presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have briefer detection windows.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, rendering results more reliable.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly described as "hair follicle tests," the assessment evaluates the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

In Dixie, WV, hair testing triumphs over urine testing due to its superior accuracy. Hair tests provide a detailed substance use history, which is invaluable for employers and professionals enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
