Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dorcas, West Virginia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing. Our centers are spread across all cities nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for a hair test over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by zero-tolerance policy employers, court systems, and probationary individuals. The primary advantage is their extended detection period—up to 90 days—making them nearly immune to manipulation. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary review for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs further confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent behavior.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Dorcas, WV

Hair follicle testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests in Dorcas, WV. The most significant benefit is its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. With a wider detection window, hair tests can reveal substance use that might go undetected in urine tests, providing more dependable results. This increased accuracy is crucial for employers committed to maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Additionally, hair tests are less prone to manipulation compared to urine tests. The observation during the collection process and the inherent robustness of hair samples reduce the likelihood of tampering. Employers thus receive results they can trust, making hair testing a superior option for detecting substance use with certainty.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Dorcas, WV

Hair follicle testing in Dorcas, WV offers the advantage of an extended detection window, up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain an in-depth understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance history. Compared to other testing methods, hair tests provide a more comprehensive view of long-term drug use, aiding in making more informed employment decisions.

The extended window is particularly beneficial for identifying habitual rather than occasional use. Employers seeking a clear picture of an individual's substance use patterns can rely on hair testing, given its ability to chronicle drug use over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
