Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Petersburg, West Virginia. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we specialize in hair testing with centers available nationwide for service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Our hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other assessments.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly leveraged hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those under probation. A major benefit is their extended detection window—up to 90 days—collected under supervision and challenging to bypass. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise tool.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the prime amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage, integrating a sample into the lab's system. This stage ensures the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, any positive screen result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives from Screening require further confirmation.

Presumptive positives at Screening lead to more hair being taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive undergo required washing before confirmation. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are tough to fake, thereby improving accuracy.
  • Historical pattern: It captures a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs appear in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
