Complete hair follicle drug tests are available in Dunmore, WV, through Accredited Drug Testing. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recent advancements in drug testing have favored hair follicle tests more often. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for these tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers and courts for those on probation, offering a longer detection window of up to 90 days. While hair tests are nearly foolproof, urine tests remain preferred for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as a robust instrument for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extensive timeline of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within their growing fibers. Samples collected near the scalp can provide a detection period for drugs and alcohol of up to approximately three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be ineffective, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in the laboratory encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for the presence of drug abuse. This method is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most specimens, but any screen that’s positive requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further validation.

When a specimen shows presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid). This complexity makes hair drug testing a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies usage pattern: Demonstrates a timeline of drug use, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No recent usage detection: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests incur more costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
