Located in Evans, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this service with nationwide centers ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body are needed. These assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

More frequently in the past few years, drug testing has included hair follicle tests. This method is preferred by many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation favor hair tests due to their extended detection times of up to 90 days and are nearly tamper-proof. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests still remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures the history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can deliver an estimated three-month detection span for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair is not only easy to gather, but also relatively tamper-resistant and straightforward to transport.

A snippet measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests that include EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn’t accessible, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When we refer to head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test outcome in the laboratory encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial drug abuse check. Though it's a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any sample with a presumptive positive in Screening requires secondary verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceedingly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process is scrutinized, from Accessioning to Confirmation, under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can indicate drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to tamper: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, thus offering more precise results.
  • Documents historical patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variabilities in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair testing against urine testing in Evans, WV, the superior detection of hair follicle tests becomes evident. Hair testing triumphs by identifying a longer history of substance use, providing a more reliable test.

Unlike traditional urine tests, hair testing in Evans, WV, offers superior accuracy over extended periods, often detecting substances long after urine tests could prove ineffective. This reliability makes hair tests a preferred alternative for many.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers employers in Evans, WV, a more extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, surpassing traditional methods. This expansive duration offers a thorough review of an individual's substance use history.

The benefit of a prolonged detection period with hair tests allows employers to make more informed decisions, understanding an employee’s or candidate’s comprehensive past substance habits beyond recent usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
