Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fairview, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain, with testing sites available across all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for screening substances. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly demand hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation use these tests. The main advantage lies in its longer detection window—up to 90 days—achieved through supervised collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair testing is recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, it offers approximately a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo necessary pre-confirmation washing. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly evaluated by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It uncovers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The test, commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
