Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Falling Spring, West Virginia. For anyone in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, offering testing sites across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized according to specific requirements.

In recent years the method to conduct drug testing has more frequently included a hair follicle drug test. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are requiring a hair drug test instead of a standard urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are used by employers who have zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The primary benefit of a hair follicle drug test includes a much longer detection period for drug use which typically is up to 90 days, collected in an observed collection process, and is nearly impossible to cheat. However, when screening drug use within the last 5 days the urine test continues to be the most accurate test.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reflect a usage timeframe of up to a 3-month period for substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other sorts (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test sample involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the sample's initial integration into a lab’s system. It ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not furnished by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary evaluation for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use for most samples, a screen showing positivity necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that suggest positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This stage separates drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positives detected in screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conformity with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a narrower detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It shows a trajectory of drug consumption over time, not merely recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair vs. Urine Testing: A Clear Winner
In Falling Spring, WV, hair follicle testing markedly outperforms traditional urine tests. When comparing these methods, hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, differentiating itself as a more reliable option. The method efficiently charts a comprehensive timeline of substance use, overwhelming the shorter detection window of urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
