In Falling Waters, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and with centers available nationwide, we can easily facilitate your test. Typically, the required hair length is 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body for most cases. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair analysis needs.

Increasingly, drug testing now incorporates hair follicle examinations. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for this method over traditional urine assessments. Companies with strict no-drug policies, legal institutions, and probation programs favor hair drug testing. Its main advantage is the extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to tamper with. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by retaining biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. Head hair refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not already entered through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid test for drug abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: It’s difficult to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Discover why hair follicle testing prevails over traditional urine tests in Falling Waters, WV. The key lies in its enhanced accuracy and reliability, offering distinct benefits not present in urine testing. Hair tests are able to identify substance use over a prolonged duration with a greater detection accuracy, making them a preferred choice among professionals tackling substance abuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
