Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Fellowsville, West Virginia. Specializing in hair analysis, we provide tests for drugs and alcohol at centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. These tests can be tailored to detect various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a prevalent method for drug screening. Preferred by employers, courts, and rehabilitation experts, this test is favored over urine tests for its zero-tolerance enforcement. A key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process, reducing the chances of tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term archive of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. By procuring hair near the scalp, it can offer approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair might be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

An Overview of the Process

The laboratory process for a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial stage of introducing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically bear a higher cost than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variabilities: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
