In Fort Ashby, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair examinations, with facilities across all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body will suffice. Hair analyses can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailor-made testing options.

Over recent times, the inclination towards using hair follicle drug assessments has seen an upsurge. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer this to the usual urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with stringent anti-drug policies, judicial entities, and probation monitors. The chief merit is its extended detection timeline, often up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection method, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for identifying recent drug consumption within 5 days, the urine test remains unsurpassable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a prolonged history of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample for initial screening and verification. For EtG, additional measurements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair means scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In laboratory processing of a drug test result, the four primary steps are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into the laboratory system, verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Though it offers a cost-effective solution to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. All samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive Screening outcome, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at far lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid tests, which makes hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated within both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests' shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It supplies a usage pattern over time instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates might impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
