At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Frankford, West Virginia. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is available at centers across all nationwide cities. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is required, either from the head's crown or from the body. These tests help detect substances like drugs, ETG/alcohol, and other custom options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly favored for drug detection. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair tests over standard urine analyses. Hair follicle tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. They provide a longer detection window, up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are near-impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detection within the past five days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The practice of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively secure from tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other kinds (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result entails four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample is adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent in an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening refers to a preliminary examination to detect drugs of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, but a positive screen requires confirmation for legal validity. Thus, any samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods such as urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug screening among the most challenging approaches.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process adheres to audits under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests are limited to a shorter detection timeline.
  • Cheating is difficult: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to manipulate, providing more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Provides historical patterns: Offers insight into drug consumption trends over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier compared to other methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, although the assessment focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
