Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Franklin, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair assessments, with locations in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests are adept at evaluating drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized screening options.

In recent developments, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle screenings are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals. The standout advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection span, often up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When extracted close to the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month detection period for these substances. It is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair not be present, an equivalent amount of body hair could be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This entails confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of misuse. While Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive identification must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that indicate positive results during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily identified as positive undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over an extended duration, beyond just recent use.

Constraints:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
