Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ghent, WV. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities in every US city equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence. Numerous employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, judiciary systems, and probationers apply hair tests. Their main advantage is an extended detection span of up to 90 days, ensuring meticulous monitoring and resistance to manipulation. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has become regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 strands of hair (resembling a #2 pencil in size) located closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or screenings over 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. It’s suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in lab processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It encompasses ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any other data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen should be verified to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample is preliminary positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original sample and set for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing methodology.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug screenings can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a reduced detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can deliver a use pattern over time instead of merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
