Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Glenwood, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing sites available across the nation to facilitate hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown, or elsewhere on your body, can be analyzed. Hair assessments can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug testing has emerged as a more common approach for substance screening. Numerous employers, judiciaries, and addiction specialists now favor hair tests over traditional urine exams. These tests are chosen by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation monitoring. A hair follicle test is advantageous due to its extended detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, conducted under direct supervision, making tampering almost impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair supplies a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug use. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the desired quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screening, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a lab entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves checking whether the sample was sealed and dispatched properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive at the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can present a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and unique differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often deemed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
