Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hamlin, West Virginia. For those needing hair or alcohol tests, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with testing centers across various cities Nationwide to facilitate these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically required. Hair testing can be customized to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug screening protocols. Employers, the legal system, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, probationary committees, and courts rely on hair tests for their extended detection period, which reaches up to 90 days. This method is hard to manipulate and is observed during collection. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an efficient mechanism for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month window to reveal alcohol and drug use. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. In instances where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be secured. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses any other hair type (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This process includes checking if the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, swift evaluation for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening outcome necessitates further confirmation to be legally valid in court. Samples flagging positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for further Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than would be seen with other modalities (like urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

For confirming a positive screening result, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Resilience to deceit: It is extremely challenging to mislead a hair drug test, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical data provision: It exposes a pattern of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent usage: Drugs become apparent in hair roughly 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparity: Individual variations in hair color and hair growth affect drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves assessing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
