Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hartford City, West Virginia. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. A minimum length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is generally suitable. Tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing increasingly utilizes hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists favor hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle exams support zero-tolerance drug policies, utilized by employers, judicial bodies, and those on probation. The main advantage is an extended detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed process, making it nearly unfeasible to bypass. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal use of alcohol and other drugs for up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, the potential for tampering is limited, and the specimens are easily transportable.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. The specimen should ideally be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screen demands confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples flagged as positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than those used in other testing methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most complex to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed positive undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
