Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Henderson, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to solution for hair-based drug or alcohol tests. With nationwide centers ready to conduct hair assessments, we ensure reliability and convenience. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head crown or body, allowing for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other custom tests.

The trend of utilizing hair follicle drug tests has surged recently. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring these tests over traditional urine samples. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, or probation settings, hair tests offer an extended detection span of up to 90 days through a supervised collection process, making them difficult to tamper with. For identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by ensnaring biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol usage for up to a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands, roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil, is recommended for testing, providing 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory processing for a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. While it's cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to be valid for legal purposes. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most demanding methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeline.
  • Hard to evade: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical insights: It can offer a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Outshines Urine Tests in Henderson, WV, is evident through its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests offer broader detection timelines and are less susceptible to manipulation, ensuring reliable outcomes, unlike urine tests which can miss longer-term substance use tracks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
