Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hendricks, West Virginia. For those in need of such a test, we provide specialized hair testing, with centers available across the nation that can conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length on the crown or body is typically required. These hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent for drug testing. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair testing over the traditional urine analysis. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. Key benefits include a longer detection period, usually up to 90 days, an observed collection method, making it almost impossible to fake. However, for short-term detection—within 5 days—urine tests still remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical account of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of its growth. When retrieved near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month period of drug and alcohol use. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair are specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for handling drug test outcomes consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of entering a sample into a lab’s system. It entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry if not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated for legal acceptance. Samples that are likely positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample potentially tests positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
